Short-Form Video Marketing: A Quick Guide for The Impatient Small Business Owner

You are a small business owner, and you read an article or heard a podcast, or your friend’s kid who just finished their first digital marketing class told you that you need to use short-from video on social media. Why are they all saying this? Because it works and that is why this article, this article, and a million other articles are telling you to embrace it.

So, we have established that short-form video marketing works, and you can use a handful of different platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc) to reach your desired customer. But before you start, are you ready for the commitment involved? Short-form video is not for the faint of heart. Like any marketing effort, you need to stick with it.

How do you do that? You develop a short-form marketing content strategy with about 90 days of videos (60 videos). Then, you start making the videos, publishing them, and adjusting to what works and doesn’t. More importantly, you make it a priority to run this project on a shoestring budget. Why?

  • If you own a cell phone made in the past five years, you can shoot video in 4k, which means you can use your phone to film your videos.
  • Most small businesses abandon their marketing initiatives before they succeed because they commit too much money upfront and then regret the lack of immediate ROI.

Now, you are ready to film and post videos over a 90 period, but before you get started, let’s answer a few more questions.

How long should the videos be? 30-60 seconds, which is 60-120 words.

What should the videos be about? Something interesting and educational. The goal is to give away free educational advice that positions you as an expert. That means you don’t talk about yourself, and you don’t talk about how you started the company.

Film it vertical or horizontal? We are talking about short-form videos…posted on social media…so viewed on someone’s phone…the answer is vertical.

Should I be serious or funny? You are probably not nearly as amusing as you think, so let’s keep it casual.

So get started. Try some stuff and expect a bunch of the videos to suck or for you to feel awkward or dumb after filming. That goes away, and you will eventually get more comfortable. Most importantly, remember that you are not entitled to people-watching your videos just because you put them out. They have to offer value. Otherwise, it’s just noise.
